about

For the largely non-domiciled barons, or indeed otherwise who decide what I hear from day to day.

Nathan Ball is an effortless crafter of enduring images, song-writer, soul-singer, stunning guitarist and builder of beautiful guitars, as well as being one of the most gentle men I’ve known. Despite his demeanour and catalogue of pastoral ballads and environmentalist anthems, his lyrics have the ability to crystallise ice-cold anger into songs of singular political power.

He wrote this at least a decade ago in response to seeing the floor of a tube-train littered with copies of The Metro, one of London’s corporate free-sheets. On talking to him about the song years later, I was amazed that he hadn’t intended, nor even noticed the poignance of red herrings and white elephants as both a literal and metaphoric description of Britain’s red-top tabloid press.

lyrics

There’s herrings and there's elephants
Red and white respectively
False flags and smoke screens
The modern day mystery

Our eyes are locked on prizes
Now the chase has become tantalising
Like cats and dogs with mirror-balls
And laser pens reflecting in

And we’re taking it all - right in
We let them supersize these lies
And we’re happily ingesting them

McDonalds for the mind
A little glitter for the eyes
Contortion for the soul
Restricted and controlled

Is it not truth that we’re supposed to see
In the papers and on TV screens
Are the people really blind to these
Hidden agendas and the fat cats’ pipe dreams?

Our chosen motivations
In consequential situations
Overlooked by wide and dazzled eyes
Celebrity obsessed and pacified

And we’re taking it all - right in
We let them supersize these lies
And we’re happily ingesting them

Mcdonalds for the mind
Glitter for the eyes
Contortion for the soul
Restricted and controlled

And we’re taking it all - right in
We let them airbrush out the lies
So theres no need for them to compromise
On McDonalds for the mind

There’s Herrings and there's elephants
Red and white respectively
False flags and smoke screens
The modern day mystery…
