October Song - Robin Williamson

Robin Williamson is one of the finest curators of song and story working today. and has long been a huge inspiration. I first discovered his poetry among the grooves of an Incredible Stringband LP, whilst crawling around under a friend’s mother’s kitchen table as a teenager, but it wasn’t until years later, on first hearing him tell tales of Finn MacCool, accompanying himself on celtic harp, that I began to realise the depth and scope of his work. His songwriting ranges from comic ditty to mystical epic, from the historical to the deeply contemporary, and his ability to hold a room totally spellbound is second to none. October Song, the first song that he ever wrote, still stuns me every time I hear it. That such a young man can create perfectly crafted verse on a first attempt, oozing wisdom beyond his years, pleases me deeply.

Like Dick Gaughan before him, Robin gave me one of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever had. We were in the great hall of Glastonbury Assembly Rooms, waiting for the sound technician to turn up and chatting about this and that. I’d been bemoaning the difficulty of touring with a band, as most gigs only seemed to pay enough to feed one hungry musician, when Robin chirped in incredulously with his quizzical Edinburgh tones,

“You shouldn’t expect to make any money at this!”

To hear this from someone of Robin’s musical stature was such a revelation I felt an enormous weight lift from my mind and have walked easier ever since.
