about

The Sights & Sounds of London Town - Richard Thompson
Bung a bob for big ben’s bongs…

Growing up in villages, first in Cumbria’s Eden Valley, then amongst the spires and squires of North-East Northamptonshire, I am well and truly a country-boy; as prone as any to the tales of London’s streets being paved with gold. On moving there for university at the tender age of eighteen, it quickly became apparent that there was a lot more chewing-gum than gold, but if any of you know which streets in which to look, I’m all ears.

Richard Thompson has been one of my favourite song-writers since I was first played a live-version of 1952 Vincent Black Lightning (replete with Andy Kershaw’s sonorous introduction) by my dear friend Jim Clark, on a mix-tape sometime in the 90s.

Way back before I knew how to license the work of other writers for commercial release, I wrote a rather frenzied, and perhaps Rakia-addled email to Mr. Thompson from an internet-cafe in the Roma mahala of Kočani, in Eastern Makedonija, fully intending to record a version of this song for what became The Djukella Orchestra’s first album, Blood & Honey. Thanks to the vagaries of recording sessions and international touring schedules, that particular recording never came to pass, but now, finally here it is, rattling like the Northern Line, barrelling down the tracks. Deepest thanks to Mati Congas for his pulsing rhythm and Piotr for his wild abandon.
